Friday July 2
My mom reports an accident-free day. Saturday July 3 My mom reports an accident-free day. We arrived home around 8pm and Majel urinated after the 10pm feeding. Sunday July 4 Fry woke me up early this morning with the sounds of his bathroom meows and scratching on the bathroom floor. I went in and told him NO and put him on the LK. He dug around for awhile, but then got down and scratched on the floor in front of the toilet again. I put him back on the LK and this time he defecated. He urinated a little later, for a looooong time. I think he urinated late in the evening as well, but I can't tell. Majel urinated tonight after the 10pm feeding and later defecated. Monday July 5 Accident-free day. Tuesday July 6 Accident-free day. Wednesday July 7 Accident-free day. Thursday July 8 Majel urinated this morning before the 10am feeding and Fry urinated after it. Majel defecated this morning but she only dropped one bullet - I think she was disturbed when it landed on the disk instead of in the toilet. Hopefully she drops the rest soon. Fry came back to the LK around noon and started doing burying motions - I figured he had to defecate so I cleaned the LK. He came back to investigate the toilet area while I had the LK off, and then wandered off again. He wasn't acting urgently, so I didn't keep a careful eye on him. When I put the clean LK back, I went and found Fry in mid-poop in the guest bedroom closet! We don't usually close off that room because he has never before shown any signs of eliminating in there. I brought him to the LK where he finished defecating. I accept responsibility for this one, but it's disheartening that Fry so easily considers alternate places to eliminate when the LK isn't available, unlike Majel who can hold it. On the plus side, he did try the LK first, it just happened to not be there! Oh well, four more days or so until we try again. Majel finished defecating in the middle of the night. |

Friday July 9
Majel urinated early this morning. After cleaning up, I put the next disk onto the LK - the regular green disk. At midnight, Fry used the new disk to urinate without hesitation. Saturday July 10 Majel used the new disk to urinate this morning. She didn't seem to have any problems, but she is still squatting in the disk instead of on the white rim. Fry wandered around a bit this morning looking confused, and he started scratching near the guest bedroom closet again, but a loud NO! from my fiance sent him back to the bathroom where he urinated without further hesitation. Sunday July 11 Majel defecated in the LK tonight with the new green disk. Fry urinated at night without hesitation. Monday July 12 Fry urinated in the LK this morning before the 10am feeding. I put some pumpkin in his breakfast so hopefully he will defecate today while I can watch him. Around 9pm he started doing his bathroom meows and pacing the house, scratching in the wrong places. I followed him around telling him NO! I put him on the LK where he would sometimes dig and sometimes just jump down. Eventually he settled down on the LK ... and urinated. I cleaned up, then went and found him upstairs scratching on the front door mat. I brought him back downstairs to the LK and he finally defecated. Tuesday July 13 Accident-free day. Wednesday July 14 Accident-free day. Thursday July 15 Accident-free day. |

Thanks so much for the congrats, Sintija! A guy who helps me toilet-train cats is definitely a keeper!
Keeping the diary is really helpful for me to spot my cats' patterns, just like other forum users who have spreadsheets and the like. Sometimes it seems like a disheartening reminder of how long this process is taking, but other times it's a great reminder of just how much progress my kitties have made! |

Friday July 16
I gave Fry some pumpkin with his 10pm feeding. Around 1am he started scratching on the bed, the floor, etc. My fiance and I took turns following him around the house saying NO! before he finally stayed on the LK and defecated. Majel got some pumpkin too, but it hasn't worked yet. She didn't urinate today, probably because she seems a bit constipated. Saturday July 17 Majel got more pumpkin with her breakfast. She finally urinated around 1pm. Shortly thereafter she defecated, but not a lot considering she last went six days ago. Sunday July 18 Majel finished defecating early this morning. Monday July 19 I think someone (probably Fry) urinated in the shower in the middle of the night. The shower door was left open, and while there was no visual evidence, there was definitely an odour coming from it in the morning. Fry urinated (again?) around 6pm. After the 10pm feeding, he spent a couple hours scratching in the wrong places, but ultimately went to sleep without doing anything. Tuesday July 20 I gave Fry some pumpkin with his 10am feeding. Shortly after, Majel urinated, then Fry urinated, then Fry went around the house to all the wrong places before he finally defecated in the LK. Late at night, Fry got onto the LK and scratched around a bit, but then jumped down and went into the hall to scratch. I told him NO! and put him back on the LK, but he jumped down and didn't do anything for the rest of the night. Wednesday July 21 Fry urinated this morning at 6am. Majel faked all day and then finally urinated a little bit late in the evening. Thursday July 22 Accident-free day. |

Besides I didn't know if my kitties will be rebellious or not and assuming they would be standard "one cat good, one cat bad" case, I decided to track records to keep an eye on the "bad" cat. In fact, both have been sooooo gooood and so understanding! My journal is more of a "yippee, another success!" report blog rather than anything else. Greetings to your furry friends from my furry friends aka B&C |

I wasn't too worried because both cats regularly defecate every 4-5 days or so, although they have both gone 6-7 days before on occasion. I worry when they go more often than that! The natural food they eat is extremely pure, so they have very little waste. I find this is actually a detriment to their toilet training - they eliminate so infrequently that it makes the training go very slowly and it's hard to reinforce their successes with such big gaps in between! But I just can't bring myself to go back to their old food.
I watch them closely for any signs of distress and I have yet to see anything that worries me. If I think they might be uncomfortable or otherwise want to speed up the process, I give them some pumpkin in their food. Actually with Fry I have started giving him pumpkin every fourth day so that I am more sure of when he'll defecate and I can guarantee that I'll be there to avoid an accident, since this is his weak spot. |

Friday July 23
Fry urinated this morning before the 10am feeding and Majel urinated after it. Fry urinated after the 10pm feeding. Majel defecated awhile later. Saturday July 24 Majel urinated early this morning. After the 10am feeding, Fry spent the next few hours scratching in all the wrong places. Eventually he stayed on the LK and defecated. We went out for the afternoon, and when we returned I discovered that the guest bedroom closet had been urinated in! (I thought it was safe to leave it open because Fry had already defecated.) Urine! I can't believe it! This is a MAJOR disappointment and I am really concerned. Seeing as Majel already urinated today and Fry didn't, I'm sure it was him, although I'm not sure it happened while we were out. The guest bedroom doubles as my fiance's man-cave, and during Fry's scratching tour earlier, he said he noticed Fry scratching in the closet. Given that the LK wasn't disturbed at all when we returned home, and Fry usually urinates before defecating, it might have happened during the morning while we were waiting for him to defecate. I think both my fiance and Fry need a good smack upside the head, but I'm settling for ignoring Fry until his next successful use of the LK. Sunday July 25 Fry urinated this morning before the 10am feeding, but the first place he tried to go was the guest bedroom closet! He sniffed all around for 5 minutes, and whether he found a scent or not, he eventually started scratching there. After a NO! from my fiance, he went off to the bathroom by himself and urinated in the LK. Majel surprised us by defecating in the LK shortly after. She urinated in the afternoon. Monday July 26 After the 10am feeding, Fry went to the guest bedroom closet and started sniffing around. I'm pretty sure he didn't find anything because after he did the same thing yesterday I bought a black light for $20 at PetSmart and went over every inch. The cats' bathroom was spotless too. (The human's bathroom ... not so much. Ew!) I was watching Fry the whole time he was sniffing in the closet, and when he looked up and saw me there, he had the grace to look completely guilty. He high-tailed it to the bathroom and got onto the LK, but jumped down after a minute without doing anything. He has been wandering the house ever since, and whenever I look at him, he again looks very guilty and runs to the bathroom, where he gets onto the LK and digs around a bit, but then gets down again. He stopped wandering around 1pm, and didn't do anything all evening. After the 10pm feeding, Fry finally urinated in the LK without any fuss. Thank goodness! I bought a new treat to use for rewards during toilet training; it is a meaty, jerky type treat instead of their regular dry treat that they get for doing other good things. Hopefully Fry will like it enough to try harder in the bathroom. Majel did not urinate today. Tuesday July 27 Majel urinated around 6am this morning, and as soon as I cleaned up, she defecated. I have no idea why she is defecating so much this week. Fry spent the morning doing the same thing as yesterday. He finally urinated after the 10pm feeding, about 10 minutes after we caught him checking out the guest bedroom closet. Wednesday July 28 Fry repeated his morning performance of the last two days, and again he didn't urinate until night - just before the 10pm feeding. I put pumpkin in his breakfast and in his dinner. Shortly after the 10pm feeding he went straight to the LK and furiously dug in the litter for a long time. Good boy! But then he jumped down and started digging on the floor in front of the toilet. Bad boy! I put him back on the LK, where he dug some more and finally defecated. Good boy! Majel urinated around midnight. Thursday July 29 Fry urinated this morning after the 10am feeding with only one fakeout in the LK and one attempt to scratch around in the bookcase. Majel did not urinate today. |
